Fundraiser benefits sheltered workshop in Hazelwood

When Hazelwood
Police Chief Carl Wolf created the Mayors' Shamrock Ball three
years ago, it was a simple fundraiser for Valley Industries.
Much to his surprise, it since has become the premiere green
tie event of the year.
"Everybody
has a good time," said Wolf, also a board member and chairman
of the event. "Each year it gets better."

Some travelers,
no matter where they are, feel right at home. "I love it in
St. Louis, " says Drew Johnson from Boise, Idaho Johnson believes
that there is wonder in wandering. "My personal philosphy
in life is kindess begets kindness, " he says. The 30 year
old has come to St. Louis to spend some time volunteering
at Valley Industries, a sheltered workshop in Hazelwood.

Throngs
of onlookers came out Saturday for Christmas in Old Town Florissant.
The event had the theme of "Old Town Winter Wonderland" and
featured a Christmas walk, Christmas parade and the tree lighting.
Shops in the area were open for holiday shopping.
The parade
winners were: Best Parade Entry "Traditional" - Valley Industries;
Best Parade Entry "Old Town Spirit" - Dooley's Florist & Gifts;
and Best Parade Entry "Originality" - J. Oscar School of Music.

Industries, a sheltered workshop in Hazelwood, has named Ron
Adams and Erica Davis as workers of the month for July. Workers
of the month become eligible to be candidates for the Worker
of the Year award.
Pam Lauber
and Brandye Gholson of Cooperative Home Care sponsored this
month's awards celebration along with Helfer's Pastries in
Florissant.

Sheltered workshops lay off employees as business
declines

Even
though Missouri's sheltered workshops may get a state funding
boost and help from a recent court ruling, some are laying
off workers because business is down.
Valley
Industries, 143B McDonnell Blvd. in Hazelwood, has had layoffs
that at times have affected half of its 230 employees. "We're
facing real tough times," said Jim Guyre, executive director
for the workshop. "We're in need of work."

As
Metro prepares to cut routes, transit users consider their
options

For eight
years, Berna Pointer has taken the bus from the Flower Valley
Shopping Center in Florissant to her job in Downtown St. Louis
and back home again.
Soon,
Pointer and other commuters will have to find a new ride.
Her route, the Halls Ferry Express, and 23 other Metro bus
routes will no longer operate as of March 30.

St. Louis-area
residents now have a scaled-back public transportation system
that may continue to shrink in the near future without new
money.
On Friday,
the Metro board of commissioners approved cuts in bus, MetroLink
and Call-A-Ride service to help make up an expected $50
million deficit in its next fiscal year, which begins July
1, 2009.

St. Louis County may be spared some of the drastic cuts in
public transportation that were predicted earlier.
A Metro
board of commissioners subcommittee on Thursday recommended
cuts that would reduce the agency's budget deficit by $35.7
million. Some of the more dramatic cutbacks may affect areas
west of Interstate 270 in West St. Louis County.

A group
of workshops that represent a cross section of Missouri's
nearly 100 workshops for people with developmental disabilities
has challenged a recent decision of the Department of Elementary
and Secondary Education (DESE) to pay them at less than the
rate demanded by statute.
Six workshops
agreed to join and proceed with litigation to ask the court
to direct the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education to pay all Missouri Workshops at the correct statutory
amount of $17 per day for each worker with a disability
that completes a six-hour work day.

Pat Leffler
has worked at Valley Industries in Hazelwood for 41 years,
the company's longest-tenured employee.
At 62,
she wants to continue working. But if Metro bus route 45 stops
running, her life may change.
"I don't
know, because I don't have any other way to get here," Leffler
said last week.

Director Carol Simms, who has been with the company for 30
years.
Simms

300 people attended the Mayors' Shamrock Ball Saturday at
the Florissant City Hall.
Mayors
Norm McCourt of Black Jack, Robert G. Lowery of Florissant
and T.R. Carr of Hazelwood hosted the gala event to benefit
Valley Industries (formerly known as the Florissant Valley
Sheltered Workshop). Valley Industries in Hazelwood provides
employment for adults with developmental disabilities.
